This 1970 Oldsmobile 442 has been in Walker’s family for 47 years! In 1970 they were in the market for a new car. They did not know then it would soon be a life-long member of the family. It was purchased by his dad to transport the kids to and from high school and college. Its shining moment was when Walker’s sister won “Miss Tupelo” and rode in the car for the Christmas parade in 1971. Both of Walker’s children also used the 442 as their get-away car after their weddings. The car has matching numbers and went into retirement in the nineties though his mom would get it out “on nice days”. In 2002 it underwent major restoration. The work was done in Mississippi at the shop that had taken care of the car since the 70's. The family moved to Texas and so did the car, after all it is part of the family. In Texas, Walker and his son enjoyed many leisurely drives together, along with parades and car shows with the Houston Oldsmobile club.
Four months ago tragedy hit - Hurricane Harvey. Walker’s car had three feet of water including 4 ½ gallons of water in the engine. The water was removed and it was now time for another major restoration. Walker and his son hit the road once again, this time to save their car. They put the car on a trailer and drove 650 miles back to Mississippi. The car is currently under restoration at Tom's Automotive, the same shop that completed the restoration fifteen years ago. The third generation of owners is working on the car. As Walker stated it’s like bringing the 442 home to family. He plans to bring it back to its original condition. After the work is complete, the car will once again return to the Lone Star state. It will continue its legacy as a member of the family when Walker’s son inherits it…that is after Walker is done having his fun. For this family the 442 is not just a car, it is a place where memories are created and relived.
